If you've noticed that your loved one’s use of drugs or alcohol has grown out of control or is negatively affecting their life, relationships, or health, you may be questioning whether they have an addiction. Answer the following 11 questions carefully and answer as honestly as you can in order to determine any difficulties with addiction your loved one may have.

1. Does your loved one often use drug and/or alcohol in larger amounts or over a longer period of time than you intended?
2. Has your loved one expressed a desire to cut back on drugs and/or alcohol or made unsuccessful attempts to do so?
3. Does your loved one spend a great deal of time finding, using, or recovering from drugs and/or alcohol?
4. Does your loved one crave or have strong urges to use drugs and/or alcohol?
5. Has your loved one's use of drugs and/or alcohol negatively impacted their ability to meet their obligations at work, home, or school?
6. Has your loved one cut back on or abandoned social, professional, or recreational activities due to their use of drugs and/or alcohol?
7. Has your loved one ever driven while intoxicated or used drugs and/or alcohol in other hazardous situations, such as before operating machinery?
8. Has your loved experienced social or relationship problems due to their use of drugs and/or alcohol and kept using anyway?
9. Has your loved one kept using drugs and/or alcohol knowing that it has caused or worsened physical or mental health issues?
10. When your loved one attempts to cut back on or stop their use of drugs and/or alcohol , do they experience uncomfortable physical or mental health symptoms (withdrawal)?
